Longer daylengths associated with poleward range shifts accelerate aphid extinction by parasitoid wasps

چکیده

Climate change is causing the poleward range-shift of many species, with consequent modifications to daylight regimes and potential impacts on light-cycle activity patterns ecological interactions. Day-active parasitoids experiencing longer summer days associated a range shift display increased attack rates their aphid hosts have higher lifetime fecundity. Theory consequently predicts that increasing photoperiod, host–parasitoid interactions would become less stable more variable population densities extinction probability. To test this prediction empirically, we conducted multigenerational aphid-parasitoid microcosm experiment in which followed dynamics under 14 18 h treatments. As predicted, found an rate both aphids daylengths. The long-day treatments also exhibited temporal variation parasitoid numbers cumulative size, consistent extinctions are due rates. Our results demonstrate light regime can affect interacting species potentially limit co-existence parasitoids, as well other trophically taxa where dependent regime. This highlights importance rarely considered effect changing conditions climate change–driven shifts, could shifts

Neuroethology of Parasitoid Wasps

Predators as diverse as snakes, scorpions, spiders, insects and snails manufacture venoms to incapacitate their prey. Most venoms contain a cocktail of neurotoxins and each neurotoxin is designed to target specific receptors in the nervous and muscular systems. Most neurotoxins act peripherally and interfere with the ability of the prey's nervous system to generate muscle contraction or relaxat...

Faster poleward range shifts in moths with more variable colour patterns

Range shifts have been documented in many organisms, and climate change has been implicated as a contributing driver of latitudinal and altitudinal range modifications. However, little is known about what species trait(s) allow for faster environmental tracking and improved capacity for distribution expansions. We used data for 416 species of moths, and show that range limits in Sweden have shi...

Natural History of Tropical Parasitoid Wasps

The order Hymenoptera currently includes the impressive number of more than 115000 known species. The tropical hymenopteran fauna, however, is poorly known and this number probably represents just a small fraction of the real richness of the group. A great part of the species within Hymenoptera is composed of parasitoids, animals that exploit other organisms to death in order to acquire the foo...
